Customer Spotlight: Kevin Bellido
For nearly a decade, Kevin Bellido has been at the heart of the UC Davis Department of Animal Science’s Avian Research & Teaching Facility, where he serves as Facility Manager. His journey began as an undergraduate working in both the Avian Facility and the Young Hall Animal Facility, and over the years, his role has grown into one that combines animal care, education, and community outreach.
In his current position, Bellido wears many hats. He oversees the health and well-being of the birds, maintains buildings and equipment, manages staff and student workers, coordinates with researchers across the country, and ensures a steady supply of eggs and birds for classes and outreach events. His work also extends beyond the university, providing eggs to local schools for hatching projects, organizing hands-on chick-handling exhibits during Picnic Day, and supporting FFA and 4H students during Ag Science Field Day.
When asked about his favorite part of the job, Bellido doesn’t hesitate: “The animals. Always loved animals as a kid. Working with the different species of birds is fun. Each has their own requirements… My favorite birds are toucans.” Teaching is another highlight for him, especially those moments when he sees students experience a sudden spark of understanding.
Bellido also has big plans for the future of avian research. “I know I can make this Facility so much better for the university,” he says, envisioning modernized aviary houses, expanded collaborations with poultry companies, and new opportunities to train students for industry careers.
Outside of work, Bellido is just as passionate about food and travel as he is about animals. Whether cooking for friends, road-tripping across the U.S., or exploring global cuisines abroad, he finds joy in discovering new flavors and new places. He has already visited 11 states, 14 national parks, and countries ranging from England to Costa Rica. Next stops include Peru and Tahiti!
With his dedication to animals, education, and community, Kevin Bellido is more than a Facility Manager—he’s a vital force shaping the future of avian research and teaching at UC Davis.
