May 30, 2017 - In early June, a couple of valves will be turned, pressure-boosting pumps will be switched on, and treated Sacramento River surface water will start flowing through the campus’s water system. Our water currently comes from deep wells on campus. The wells will still be used to supplement the surface water from the Sacramento River (especially during summer months when the campus’s water use peaks), but the campus will use surface water as the primary supply. Reducing groundwater use in favor of surface water, which is a more sustainable source, is an initial step toward improved groundwater management. The surface water is also “softer” and many claim it tastes better.
