The California pepper tree is a medium-sized tree with fern-like leaves that are aromatic when crushed. Its large trunk is covered with flaky bark. Small rose colored berries follow creamy flowers.

Notes: Leaves are aromatic when crushed. Commonly used as a shade tree in large courtyards and parks. Roots can be invasive and destructive. Older trees develop characteristically burled trunks and branches.
