Location: Next to visitor information kiosk on Howard Way
Family: Fagaceae
Sunset Zones: 7-9, 14-24, H1
Native Range: Coast Ranges of the western United States
Habitat: Prefer deep soil with plenty of room to grow. Plants are generally found closer to coastal areas.
General Habit: Evergreen, round-headed, wide-spreading tree to 20-70 ft.
Notes: Susceptible to "sudden oak death", but does not seem to have affected trees on the UC Davis campus. "Sudden oak death" happens when a fungus-like pathogen attacks a tree, often killing limbs and/or leaving it vulnerable to attacks from other organisms.
